Broken Spring Replacement

Broken Spring Replacement

Always replace both springs if your system uses two—if one broke, the other is likely worn. Take a picture of the spring setup before starting. Count the exact number of turns when unwinding and winding the springs Would you like help identifying the correct replacement spring or a step-by-step guide tailored to your specific garage door setup?

No garage door system can function without quality springs, making them one of the most important components of this system.

Disconnect the Power & Secure the Door

Unplug the garage door opener. Use locking pliers/clamps to secure the door in the down position.

Release Tension from the Broken Spring

Insert a winding bar into one of the winding cone holes. Do this slowly and cautiously to avoid sudden releases.

Remove the Broken Spring

Unbolt the spring from the center bracket. Slide the spring off the torsion bar.

Install the New Spring

Slide the new spring onto the torsion bar. Reattach it to the center bracket. Make sure the winding cone is on the correct side.

Wind the Spring

Use winding bars to add the correct number of turns (usually noted by the spring manufacturer). Each full turn increases tension—follow guidelines for your door size.

Install the New Cable

Hook the new cable to the bottom bracket on the door. Run it up the door track and around the cable drum.

Garage off Track Repair

Garage off Track Repair

If your garage door is off track, it’s usually due to a broken cable, a misaligned track, an obstruction, or a hit to the door. This is a common issue — and often fixable without replacing the entire system. Use pliers to slightly open the track where the roller came out. Guide the roller back into the track. Use a mallet to gently reshape the track once it’s back in.

At that moment, when you’re off to work for an important meeting or presentation or about to drop the kids off at school, your garage

Disconnect the Garage Door Opener

Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the door from the opener. This allows you to move the door manually.

Secure the Door

If the door is partially open, prop it up with locking pliers on the track or a sturdy support under the door. Do not allow it to slam shut—this can damage the door and hurt someone.

Realign the Rollers

Guide the roller back into the track. Use a mallet to tap the track back into shape. Tighten any loose bolts or brackets.

Check Track Alignment

Use a level to make sure vertical and horizontal tracks are straight and parallel.

Reconnect the Opener

Pull the emergency cord toward the door to re-engage the opener trolley. Test manually first, then electronically.

Pull the emergency release cord (red rope) to disengage the opener trolley. If it's partially open, clamp the door to the tracks using locking pliers to stop it from falling.

Garage Door Tune-up

With the door closing, wave an object in front of the sensors — the door should reverse. If it doesn’t, clean the sensors and align them until the lights stay solid Try stopping the door mid-close — it should reverse easily with resistance. Adjust opener force/sensitivity if needed (consult your opener manual).

Just like your car and home require regular maintenance, so does your garage door. Unfortunately, most people neglect just how important this feature is.

Check Auto-Reverse Feature

Place a piece of wood or object in the door’s path and close the door. Door should automatically reverse when it hits the object.

Clean Tracks

Wipe down inside of tracks with a damp cloth. Remove debris, spiderwebs, or buildup that may cause jams.

Inspect Weatherstripping

Check bottom rubber seal and side seals. Replace if cracked, brittle, or missing to keep out water and pests.

Check Rollers

Worn, cracked, or wobbly rollers should be replaced. Nylon rollers are quieter; steel ones last longer.

Examine Cables

Look for fraying or rust near the bottom brackets. Don’t touch cables — under high tension. Call a pro if damaged.

If it doesn’t, clean the sensors and align them until the lights stay solid. Pull the emergency release cord and test door movement by hand — it should glide smoothly.
